Question: Why are some foods taxed and others aren’t?

Answer: Tax exemptions do not apply to some foods or food products.

For example, if the food is candy-coated – like honey-roasted peanuts – the exemption doesn’t apply.

Other examples include:
  • Food that is sold heated
  • Food that can be consumed on the premises
  • Food that is ready-for-eat that has been prepared by a seller
  • Sandwiches
  • Carbonated drinks
  • Candy and confectionary treats
  • Pet food
