Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- One of our viewers -- Mary Ann -- recently attended a funeral and was told by the funeral director that all traffic laws in Syracuse should be followed during the procession. That includes stopping at red lights and stop signs. Mary Ann has been to several funerals before and thought processions were given the right-of-way. Has something changed she asked?
Well, funeral processions have, in the past, been allowed to proceed through stop signs and red lights with caution, but only as a courtesy.
Gary Bulinski with the Syracuse Police Department says New York state traffic law has always required drivers to obey traffic control devices.
With that said, a police officer can use his or her discretion when issuing tickets to those who disobey the law.
The Syracuse Police Department reminds drivers that any car in a funeral procession that disobeys a traffic control device and becomes involved in an accident is not exempt from liability.
