Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- The owners of Sharon’s Restaurant and Goodtime Sports Bar have tried everything to salvage the building that once housed the popular Weber’s restaurant on Danforth Street. But now, the building is condemned and the restaurant and tenants are being evicted.
New problems pop up at the restaurant practically every week, from the broken heater vent to sewer issues.
For the past year the owners have done $60,000 worth of maintenance, such as adding new bar equipment and new ceilings.
But restaurant owner Sharon Washington says, “It’s so embarrassing when we have to put papers in the window that there’s something small going on that’s fixable. We’re not making any money because we’re putting it right back into this building.”
The building’s owners, Donna and Otto Weber, foreclosed on the building less than a month ago. Syracuse Realty Group is now preparing the property for sale on behalf of Apex Mortgage of Pennsylvania and a representative told NewsChannel 9 they plan to start by fixing the roof this week.
What the group didn't know, is that Syracuse Codes Enforcement deemed the building uninhabitable because of water issues and the letter informing them was sent to the Webers.
The miscommunication left Sharon's Restaurant and the tenants above it living and working in dangerous conditions.
“We're trying not to give up on it, but we have to. We went too far. If we have to, we have to, but we've been trying to sustain the best way we could,” Sharon told NewsChannel 9.
Now, the building that was home to Weber's for decades and Sharon's Restaurant for only a year, won't be serving the Syracuse Northside with soul food and a friendly atmosphere until the water is able to be turned on.
After NewsChannel 9 put the Syracuse Realty Group in touch with Codes Enforcement on Tuesday, they’re now working out a plan to fix the water issue. If you believe the property you’re renting or leasing is unfit, call you local Code Enforcement Department. They can put you in touch with an agency that will find you a new place to live.
