Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – The Department of Motor Vehicles’ collects a $10 Motor Vehicle Enforcement Fee that is charged by insurance companies.

The state collects the money under Insurance Law Section 91-10 and it recently went up.

The fee was $5 just a few years ago, but doubled during Governor David Paterson’s time in office when his administration struggled to close a massive state budget gap.

The money collected goes toward the New York State Police and is used for vehicle theft and insurance-fraud prevention.
