Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – If a driver hits an animal that’s obstructing the road, he or she should call the Department of Transportation at (315) 428-4351.

The call will be directed to the department’s nearest residency. If the accident occurs on a state road, DOT crews will be sent to clean it up.

Otherwise, the appropriate municipality’s DPW crew will be notified. Also, if the damage to your car – or any other person’s property – is valued at more than $1,000, the driver involved must file an accident report with the state. The Department of Motor Vehicles offers those forms online.
