Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – While boys’ lacrosse and girls’ lacrosse share many similarities, female athletes aren’t required to wear the same kind of protective equipment as their male counterparts.
The rules in the women’s game are significantly different. Whereas contact is permitted in the boys’ game, the girls’ variety has rules calling for a protective “halo” around a player’s head. If a stick comes close, a whistle blows and the play is stopped. The team with the player whose space was violated gets the ball.
In addition, defenders must give shooting space to a player with possession on the attack.
Body checking isn’t permitted in the girls’ game. Stick checks are only allowed below the waist and limited body contact is allowed on face-offs and ground balls.
The only protective gear the players must wear in the open field is a pair of goggles.
