25 down, 3 to go..... (8-28-12)
We just touched 90 degrees both Saturday and Sunday which means we still have an outside shot at reaching the record of 90 degree days set back in 1955. (28 days) After Sunday we were up to 25 days and it looks very likely we will reach the 90s this Friday to bring that number to 26. That means going into September we need two more days. Statistically a tough order but not impossible. In half of the last ten years we’ve had 90 degree weather in September and in four of those there were two or more days. If we end up short by a day we may end up looking back to last Friday, when we were only 89 degrees, and wonder “what if”.
Meanwhile, here is where we stand (through Sunday) with the other warmest summer months in Syracuse history. This chart looks at the mean temperature for the meteorological months of June through August.
Summer | Mean Temp |
2005 | 73.7 F |
1949 | 73.5 F |
1955 | 73.2 F |
2012 | 72.7 F |
2011 | 72.1 F |
It’s looking like we will stay settled in the 4th slot for hottest summers and won’t budge through the end of the week. Even though we still have five days to go in the month it is going to be hard to gain half a degree let alone the 1 F we would need tie the Summer of 2005. In fact, I plugged in our forecasted temperatures through the end of the week and our average would be the same as it is now.
We received our first good dose of rain in over a week last night here in Syracuse. Still, in spite of that, it looks like we will still end up in the top ten of driest summers.
Summer | Total Rainfall |
1936 | 3.68” |
1913 | 5.21” |
1965 | 5.33” |
1999 | 5.35” |
1960 | 5.58” |
1953 | 5.83” |
1933 | 6.24” |
1969 | 6.41” |
2012 | 6.41” |
1912 | 6.68” |
