The weather for Thanksgiving Day looks to be outstanding here in central New York.  It may not be the warmest Thanksgiving on record here (66 in 1941 holds that title)  but it will be hard to top upper 50s with plenty of sunshine.  Here is a list of the top warmest Thanksgiving days in Syracuse:

YearDayTemperature
1941November 20th66 F
1908November 26th65 F
2004November 25th63 F
1934November 29th62 F
1933November 30th61 F
1914November 26th61 F
1968November 28th60 F

So it looks like tomorrow’s weather its going to put us in pretty lofty Thanksgiving Day territory.  Actually, only one of those year’s on the above list, 1914, was warm AND dry. We expect dry weather here in central New York tomorrow.

Thanksgiving’s warmth is also coming at the tail end of a remarkable stretch of sunny, dry and WINDLESS weather.  Here is a list of the daily average wind speeds for Syracuse over the last week.

DateAve. Wind Speed
November 143.4 mph
November 151.8 mph
November 162.5 mph
November 171.8 mph
November 183.7 mph
November 193.6 mph
November 201.1 mph
Normal November10.2 mph

By the end of the week, and especially early this weekend, one of the many big changes you’ll notice is an increase in winds.  On top of the wind will come a big drop in temperature and a good chance of getting our first accumulating snow of the season.  The jet stream winds aloft, which have been camped out well to our north over the last week, will finally be on the move to the south.  It looks like our weather is finally going to start behaving like the end of November.  Here are a few maps from the GFS computer model that show the change.

It is looking more and more like this change in the jet stream will cause lake effect snow showers by late Friday night continuing into Saturday.  While it is still three days away and a little too early to throw out specific accumulations, I think you may need your shovel for the first time this season.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
