A January thaw right around the corner....(1-3-12)
I’ve given a lot of time to the snowy weather both here and on air the last couple of weeks and I’m sure that all the winter enthusiasts are ecstatic. However, there are a fair number of folks out there that want no part of the snow and the cold. They could care less whether there is enough snow to ski or snowmobile on. To those folks we have some good news: a January thaw seems to be in the making. Our computer models have been emphatic over the last few days that jet stream winds aloft will head north next week, taking with it the cold, arctic air over us right now. Here is a look at what the GFS is forecasting for early next week.
It looks like the mild weather will likely hold through the end of the week. Here is a comparison of the GFS and European ensemble means in the 8 to 10 day time frame in the future.
Keep in mind, this is a mean that goes from Thursday through Saturday night. It is possible that we are very mild at the start of this 3 day period but cool down by the end. We’ll see how things unfold after the end of next week. While the trends point toward a change to colder weather beyond the end of last week, it looks like initially the core of the coldest air will shoot into the Plains states with some of that cold air oozing into the East. This air, while cold, will modify a bit as it moves east.So for people sick of the snow and the cold, it looks like you’ll get a break. For skiers and snowmobilers enjoy this weekend and sit tight for the following week.
