Behold the March sun at work....(3-17-13)
We are now closing in on the vernal equinox (the first day of Spring), which means the sun is as high as it is during the later part of September and that strong March sun can do some amazing things. Being higher in the sky, the sun is more efficient at heating things. In other words, the sun rays are more concentrated today than they are on say December 17th or January 17th. In a practical sense, that makes it easier to melt snow. Here are a couple of pictures taken about 3 hours apart this morning. Look what happened to last night’s 1 inch snowfall:

Notice that the snow is melted from the blacktop of the driveway but the lighter colored sidewalk (which is cooler) still has snow. March sunshine, Mother Nature snow shovel!
Of course, there is more accumulating snow headed toward central New York late Monday into Monday night. This snow will probably not be melted away by March sun on Tuesday.
