Heat Wave Spreads East...(6-27-12)
The heat is on the move in the middle of the country. You have probably heard for the last couple of days about the record heat going on in the Denver area. They had 5 straight days of 100+ F heat culminating with 105 F both Monday and Tuesday which tied their all-time record high. Today (Wednesday) they were a mere 97 F and they are almost 7 and a half degrees above normal for the month of June. One of the reasons Denver was a bit cooler today is the heat is now on the move into the Plains with sights set on the Ohio Valley and parts of the Great Lakes for Thursday. I made a quick scan of some of the National Weather Service offices and found these forecasted highs for Thursday:City | Forecasted High | Normal High |
Chicago | 100 F | 83 F |
St. Louis | 108 F | 88 F |
Kansas City | 105 F | 86 F |
Indianapolis | 105 F | 85 F |
When I last check there were parts of 14 states that are under Heat Advisories or Excessive Heat Warnings. Are we in store for this heat here in central New York? Probably just a glancing blow. While the extreme heat is currently moving east, after Thursday it will actually be shunted to the southeast. Here is a view at the 500 mb maps of the GFS first from Wednesday then friday and you see clearly how the heat shifts:
Normally, I would be a bit nervous with a pattern you see on the second of the two maps. Central New York is right on the edge of the heat and humidity while strong jet stream winds (indicated by the packing of the solid black lines) near the Canadian/ U.S. border. That can be a recipe for strong thunderstorms. So far, though, the only signs of strong thunderstorms close to CNY might be Thursday night. Storms are forecasted to break out over the Great Lakes late Thursday then drop southeast after that. Right now, there is a difference in opinion from our computer models as to how close to CNY any thunderstorms may come but something tells me these storms may end up dropping to our southwest over western Pennsylvania as they try to migrate closer to the greatest moisture. Still it bears watching and we’ll update you tomorrow (Thursday) if there are any changes.
