Lake Ontario water temperature (9-16-11)
(WSYR-TV)
With the return of the words ‘lake effect’ to the forecast jargon, I was curious, as I’m sure some of you, as to the state of Lake Ontario’s water temperatures. For as warm as the lake got this summer, it’s surprising that it doesn’t take long to cool down. Here’s a look at the temperature observation from satellite this morning. Eyeballing it, it seems as though the lake has cooled down to an average surface temperature somewhere in the upper 60s. Disregard the cold readings near Rochester, there were some lake effect clouds messing up the readings. Click on the image for a full screen view.
How does that compare to normal? Here’s a plot of the current water temperature (red) vs. the average from 1992-2010. We were way above the average this summer, but are now sliding down closer to the average. Again, click on the image to see it full screen.
