The warm year of 2012 continues to roll along. Some numbers are coming out now that show just how warm the first 8 months (January-August) has been. This first map ranks those 8 months by state. The higher number, the warmer the weather. Where you see ‘118’ that represents the warmest January-August in 118 years of record keeping.
In Syracuse, we continue to be on a pace for the warmest year in history. Here our top 10 list of warmest years through the end of August:
Year
Temperature
2012
54.8 F
1933
53.0 F
1921
52.7 F
1949
52.7 F
1991
52.3 F
2002
52.3 F
1998
52.2 F
1938
52.1 F
2010
52.0 F
1937
51.7 F
The big story is not whether we are in first or not but the margin between this year and the next closest year -- 1933. While the other positions are separated by just a few tenths of a degree the difference between 1st and 2nd is a whopping 1.8 F! This huge margin carries over to the national mean temperature. Look at this graph from the National Weather Service. I showed you this chart after July and now, after ending August, we are still way ahead of any other year in terms of temperature.
The next chart is a bit different as someone in the National Weather Service has taken it upon themselves to figure out how the United States temperature will finish the year under a couple of scenarios. It comes as no surprise that if our temperature in September through December averages above normal or even near normal 2012 will end up as the warmest year on record. What blows my mind is we could end up with temperatures in the coolest third of past years over the next 4 months and STILL break the record.
