One of the big themes to the summer weather wise has been the drought in the center of the country. It started late in the spring and from everything I’ve read it had a big impact on the corn crop in the Midwest. It is too late to save this year’s crop but there was some much needed rain that fell last weekend in some of the hardest hit areas thanks to the remnants of Hurricane Isaac. The numbers are in this morning and we can see exactly how much of an impact it had. First, I’m going to show a map of radar estimated rainfall from this past weekend over the Midwest. the core of the heaviest rain was over Missouri and Illinois where upwards of half a foot of rain fell:
Now lets show you a before Isaac drought map and an after Isaac drought map from the National Weather Service and Department of Agriculture:
While parts of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana saw a big improvement they are still in drought conditions. Also, it did nothing to alleviate the drought farther west across the Plains.
Here in central New York, the map stayed the same since last week but the data cut off was Tuesday morning before the heavy rain that fell over areas north of Syracuse. That rain and the rainfall we anticipate this Saturday will likely cause a change to the map here when we get our next update in a week.
By the way, I posted a blog yesterday about some other interesting tidbits about this summer's weather across the country.
You can check it out here.
