(WSYR-TV, Syracuse) If you're a snow lover, there's still plenty of green grass outside your window. While the amount of snow hasn't increased significantly, meteorologically, things are starting to look up in terms of snow.
The first storm on the docket is lifting our way from the southern US. This storm has lots of moisture with it, but as it tracks just about over us Tuesday and Tuesday night, there just isn't any cold air for this low to work with. Evaporative cooling at the start, could cause some snowflakes to mix in, but Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, the precipitation will be primarily rain.
The thing we'll be watching later Tuesday night, is that as the low moves from near Binghamton Tuesday evening, into the St. Lawrence Valley by Wednesday morning, colder air will be drawn southward. This will change to rain to snow. Since the majority of the precipitation will fall as rain, what falls as snow will be minimal. Accumulations of snow by Wednesday morning will be a trace to 2 inches. I think the bigger problem will be the rapid drop in temperature, falling snow, and gusty winds. All of these factors will combine to produce a very wintry morning commute Wednesday morning. Temperatures will be dropping below freezing, so whatever is wet, will get icy. Temperatures Wednesday will drop into the low 20s, and combined with winds of 20-30 mph with higher gusts, it will feel like it's in the single digits to low teens.
There will be some lake effect snow around through the day Wednesday. At this point it doesn't look like a significant event, but the falling snow, coupled with the falling temperatures, will make it feel very wintry around here Wednesday.
