For the first time since June 2011, the lower 48 states as a whole had temperatures in October below normal. The core of the coolest air in October ended up in the middle of the country as this map shows.
In Syracuse, we were about three and a half degrees above normal for the month. That makes it 9 out of 10 months now in 2012 that Syracuse has had above normal temperatures. The folks at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, NC have crunched the numbers for the entire year and even with the cooler than normal October factored in, the United States is still on pace for the warmest year in over 100 years of record keeping.
That gap between 2012 and the other years on the graph above signals we have plenty of cushion to set the record for the warmest year. We would have to have one of the coldest November/December periods NOT to break the record. That graph alone is impressive but
look at this chart which lists where many large cities across the country stand temperature-wise for the first 10 months of the year
.
When you look just at Syracuse’s numbers we also have quite the lead on our warmest years on record.

A week into November and Syracuse is already more than 6 degrees before normal for the month but as we’ve mentioned over the last week we’ve got a warming trend on tap. A large part of the lower 48 will have an average of above normal temperatures over the next 2 weeks.
This 8 to 14 day period takes us right up to thanksgiving. It remains to be seen whether the upcoming stretch of milder weather will put us back above normal for the month.
