Where's the snow? Is it a record?
We’ve seen 0.7” of snow for the season thus far. Just a tenth of an inch of snow has been recorded this month at Syracuse’s Hancock Airport. So, this begs the question, are we in record territory? Here are the top 5 least snowy Decembers in Syracuse:
| Rank | Value | Year |
| 1 | 5.9 | 1994 |
| 2 | 7.1 | 1965 |
| 3 | 7.3 | 2001 |
| 4 | 8.8 | 1986 |
| 5 | 10.9 | 1982 |
This year is such a stark contrast to what we “perceive” as normal December snowfall. Normally, 28.3” of snow is recorded in Syracuse in December. Interestingly enough, if you look at the previous 6 Decembers, half of them were among the 5 snowiest Decembers in Syracuse! To me, that’s amazing, and flies in the face of what we’re seeing this year. We’re also seeing paltry snow, right beside the snowiest December since 1949.
I do find it odd that we haven’t had an inch of snow yet for the season. The latest in December we’ve gone until we’ve seen our first inch of seasonal snow is December 22, 1998.
I also got an e-mail last week asking what the least snowy winters are:
| Rank | Value | Year |
| 1 | 59.4 | 2001-02 |
| 2 | 66 | 1982-83 |
| 3 | 66.9 | 1994-95 |
| 4 | 76.1 | 1956-57 |
| 5 | 77.3 | 1961-62 |
| 6 | 77.5 | 1952-53 |
| 7 | 79 | 1980-81 |
| 8 | 81.2 | 1967-68 |
| 9 | 81.2 | 1972-73 |
| 10 | 83 | 1966-67 |
