Who's got more snow than Syracuse? (12-23-11)
It tried real hard to snow this morning, but it was just too warm for anything to stick here in Syracuse. There was a light accumulation northeast of Syracuse up near the Tug Hill but even there it wasn’t anything to write home about this late into December. Syracuse is still stuck at 1.7” for the season. As a public service I did some searching to find some of the cities in the United States that ahead of Syracuse this winter for snow. It is a fairly long list:City | Snowfall | City | Snowfall |
Denver | 29.5” | Allentown | 6.8” |
Concord | 25.7” | Albany | 6.1” |
Worcester | 16.3” | Des Moines | 5.7” |
Hartford | 12.3” | Detroit | 5.4” |
Burlington | 9.4” | Buffalo | 3.0” |
Erie | 9.2” | Green Bay | 3.0” |
Minneapolis | 8.4” | New York City | 2.9” |
Binghamton | 7.4” | Pittsburgh | 2.5” |
Cleveland | 7.0” | Providence | 2.3” |
Portland, ME | 6.9” | Rochester | 2.1” |
The thing about these numbers is that most of these cities are running below normal with snow like we are but yet are still ahead of Syracuse. Syracuse is almost 3 feet below normal for this point in the season. The odds of a white Christmas are slim indeed after mostly rain fell Thursday night and Friday morning. There will likely be no snow on the ground this Christmas in Syracuse (the first time since 2006) and the only snow will be some snow showers that move in Sunday evening. Just in case you were wondering, here is a break down of some past Christmas snow numbers: Christmases with snow in the air | 65% |
Christmases with measurable snow (.1”>) falling | 40% |
Christmases with snow on the ground | 76% |
Christmases with measurable snow (1”>) on the ground | 61% |
In other news, we are still running about 7 degrees above normal for December and that is on top of 6.2 degrees above in November. Those numbers may be a bit abstract but I just received something that put those numbers in perspective for me. I just received my National Grid bill and compared to last year my November/December bill this year was about 20% lower! That is certainly one benefit to this mild weather.
