In general, safe weight loss means a gradual weight loss of no more than one or two pounds a week. Here are some other features to look for in a safe weight loss plan. The menus should meet the RDAs (R-D-As) for vitamins and minerals and include a variety of foods, not just a few choices. It's also important that the program includes strategies for maintaining your weight, since long-term weight maintenance is even more challenging than losing weight. Check to see if the plan gives you advice on changing eating habits and activity levels or encourages counseling, all of which can assist in keeping weight off. Before beginning any weight loss or exercise regimen, it's wise to consult a doctor. Those who have health problems or want to lose more than 15 or 20 pounds are especially encouraged to seek medical evaluation before they start. Plans that involve long-term liquid meal replacements or calorie restrictions below 1200 (twelve hundred) calories per day should only be used while under a physician's care.
