Transfer of records

As you plan your move, there are certain things to think about when making arrangements for transferring services or records. Keep in mind the date you want services to begin in your new home. It is usually a good idea to have services start at least a day before you plan to move in. Also note the date you want services disconnected in your current home; it is helpful to have your phone disconnected the day after you move, so you can be contacted at your old residence on the day of the move. It is also important to inform the service company of the address where the final bill from that residence should be sent. For telephone service, note how you want your name to be listed in the new telephone directory. Remember to contact dentists, physicians, schools and any other businesses where it may be necessary to transfer records to your new area. You may want to draft a form letter explaining your plans to move. This can be sent to any important business associations. It is helpful to begin informing businesses about 30 days prior to your moving date. When you move, it is recommended that you carry any records with you if possible. Otherwise you may want to consider photocopying all essential documents and sending them to your new residence or, if the moving company is transporting them, you may want to purchase a fireproof case for the documents. If this is the case, be sure to alert the moving company about the importance of the case. For more information about transferring services and records, contact a moving company in your area.
