2 killed in Tompkins County crash; 3rd in critical condition

Newfield (WSYR-TV) – State Police are investigating a crash in Tompkins County that took the lives of two people and left a third in critical condition late Wednesday afternoon.

According to State Police, 56-year-old Pamela Klemme of Syracuse was traveling southbound on State Route 13 when her vehicle moved into the northbound lane and collided with a car driven by Seymour Smidt, 83, of Ithaca.

Klemme was taken to Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, where she died as a result of her injuries.

A passenger in Smidt’s car, 87-year-old Ruth Schwartz of Ithaca, was airlifted to Cayuga Medical Center where she died.

Smidt was also airlifted to Cayuga Medical Center. He was treated there for internal injuries and then taken to a hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he was listed in critical condition.
