SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - A 6-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a motorcycle on Roberts Avenue in Syracuse. Police say the driver fled the scene.
Investigators say the child was crossing the 200 block of Roberts Avenue at about 1:30 p.m. when the motorcyclist hit him.
The child suffered a leg injury and abrasions to the head, but is expected to recover.
Neighbors say accidents like this one are far too common and they want something done about it.
"The cars just zoom through here. They don't slow down. They don't make sure that children aren't crossing. They just speed through here," said neighbor Joan Counterman.
Counterman has lived in the area all her life. She said Saturday's accident scene was all too familiar.
"I got hit right out here because the guy was coming too fast around the corner. He got me in the legs because I hit the top of his trunk to make him slow down," said Counterman.
Even with a posted speed limit sign, neighbors say people still speed down Roberts Avenue, causing accidents and injuries. They said more needs to be done to keep people safe.
"Down at the corner I think there should be another stop sign and I think there should be a sign letting them know children are at play," said Counterman.
Witnesses say the motorcycle was dark or black and could possibly be a Harley Davidson.
Police say the driver was a male wearing a black leather jacket.
