For the past several days, the focus has been on the blizzard that has crippled much of the Northeast. Now, we turn our eyes to the Northern Plains, where the next storm system will create weather trouble for central New York to start the work week.
Low pressure is currently straddling the Kansas-Nebraska border with a cold front extending southward. Through today, this low will track northeastward, moving toward the lower Great Lakes by this evening. Several Plains states will be impacted by blizzard conditions today including Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, and Minnesota.
In the meantime, high pressure has full control over the weather in CNY. That means a good amount of sunshine and an overall pleasant day. Winds will be light out of the southeast and temperatures will modify into the low to mid 30s, making for a more comfortable feel when compared to yesterday’s 20s.
By Monday morning, the aforementioned low pressure system will be over Lake Michigan. As it nears closer to central New York, we will see a few changes. First, winds will increase. We’re expecting gusts to increase upwards of 30mph through the overnight into Monday. Secondly, the low will introduce precipitation to the area prior to sunrise. A threat for a wintry mix arrives from west to east likely beginning around 4am. Areas west and south of Syracuse, such as in the southern Finger Lakes, may experience freezing rain through sunrise. Elsewhere, the chance for freezing rain will be confined to sheltered valley areas with regular rain falling for most.
Scattered rain and wind continues through Monday before the cold front passes late in the day. This will bring back the threat for a wintry mix into Monday evening before westerly winds align and create lake effect snow showers east of Lake Ontario through Tuesday.
