North Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Parents in the North Syracuse School District are speaking out about a school musical in the works, despite concerns about a racial issue.

At the last district meeting, community members expressed concern that the high school is doing the play “The Wiz” – an African-American musical – but no black students were given lead roles.

On Monday, parents in favor of the performance said the students should be allowed to continue on with the show.

“Children do not see color as being an issue for being able to portray a roll in a school musical, race should not have come into play whatsoever,” said parent Maureen Messerschmidt.

Superintendent Kim Dyce Faucette says there has been no discussion about cancelling the play. At the meeting last week, the president of the local NAACP spoke out, calling for more dialogue about race issues in the school.
