Mattydale (WSYR-TV) -- A Good Samaritan provided some much needed help in the darkest of days.

Barbara Bridenbaker’s mother passed away last year and since then, she’s been struggling to make the payments for her funeral arrangements.

On Thursday, an anonymous donor agreed to pay the balance she owed and reimburse her more than $1,000.

Bridenbaker may never know why or who was behind the generous gift, but there’s one thing she knows for sure – she’s incredibly grateful.

“I would hug them so hard and thank them so much,” she told NewsChannel 9.

It started with a phone call to the Krueger Funeral Home in Mattydale. The caller simply offered the money, but didn’t want any credit. Owner Howard Kreuger has been in the business for decades, but says he’s never seen anything like this.

“It’s just nice being part of good news once…usually I tend to people when they hear bad news,” Kreuger said.

Even in times of bad news, Kreuger remembers Bridenbaker as a good person.

“She touched me more than some people…very appreciative,” he said.

Bridenbaker says the money will help her make necessary home improvements, including a new roof.

“These last three years have been horrible, just horrible…This is going to help so much,” she said.
