Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Artwork which will fill the new Centro bus hub is beginning to take shape.
Artist Margie Hughto has already used over 3,000 pounds of clay to make the artwork for the new Centro bus hub.
“I hope when people go to this site they get a feeling for our gorgeous landscape in the area,” said Hughto.
Hughto is making four 14-foot tall pieces to represent each season and a grand chandelier as a centerpiece, which will feature clay and glass leaves hanging over the Centro ticket booth.
Drivers coming down Warren Street, crossing Adams will be able to see the chandelier through the windows hanging on the other side of the building.
“We think it’s going to be spectacular,” said Centro’s Director of Marketing and Communications, Steve Koegel.
The artwork is budgeted at $65,000 for the $18-million project -- Eighty percent of which is from federal taxes.
“We have the funding available. We think it's very important to have a very robust artistic display right from the get-go,” Koegel. "The first time people walk in this building we want to make a great first impression and we think Margie's artwork will do so."
Although a display of school children's artwork would save money, Hughto says her work will create a better sense of place.
“This is very permanent. And it's like going to see a movie done by a professional -- Stephen Spielberg versus a movie made by kids. There's a place for everything, right?” Hughto said.
No matter the cost, Hughto is definitely putting in the effort needed to create a masterpiece she hopes will brighten passengers’ day.
The artwork will be finished and installed in March and the Centro hub is scheduled to open to the public in June.
