Weedsport (WSYR-TV) -- A Weedsport family is celebrating a special homecoming on the heels of Thanksgiving. Baby Easton Friedel
was sent to a hospital in Ohio after he was born with a rare condition that causes blisters all over his body.
The baby boy that warmed the hearts of thousands finally met his extended family in Central New York Friday.
"I don't know how we'd do it without everyone. It has made it so much easier knowing the kids have been taken care of at home and that his room is taken care of at home," said Easton’s mom Danielle Friedel.
The journey began in August when Easton Friedel was born with painful blisters, a condition known as EB. With each day spent away from home in a Cincinnati hospital, the Friedel's story spread online. Tens of thousands of dollars poured in from strangers.
Volunteer pilots helped keep the family connected, shuttling Easton's brothers to Ohio for visits, hoping to boost the families spirits.
"There are so many parts of the healing process, but one of them really is family. So to be able to be a part of bringing them together is really what makes it all worthwhile,” said Patient Airlift Services Volunteer Pilot Joe Howley.
The support continued with a newly remodeled baby room, a surprise for mom and a labor of love for a Long Island contractor who'd never met the Friedel family, but felt compelled to donate his time.
"We were shocked when all this happened right after Easton was born. I'm really hoping that it follows the other families, not only with EB, but anyone, any children. There are so many children that need the help,” Danielle Friedel told NewsChannel 9.
The Patient Airlift Service flew the Friedel family home for free and they’re always looking for volunteer pilots. If you’d like to learn more, CLICK HERE.
