Syracuse (WSYR-TV) - Warmer weather and a shorter winter could yield a longer tick season this summer, and that could mean more illnesses.

Federal lawmakers are urging Congress to fight back against Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. A proposed bill would boost research, while increasing education so that patients and doctors know how to fight the bite.

“We need some kind of vaccination that can deal with this issue and we need more research in that and we’re proposing that as well,” said Senator Chuck Schumer. “That’s a little more long term, but the education is key because if you catch it within 14 days you won’t get serious Lyme disease.”

Schumer says the goal is to help patients and doctors be more proactive in treating tick bites.
