Boating accident sends sailboat to bottom of Erie Canal
Lyons (WSYR-TV) -- Wayne County deputies are investigating a boating incident that sent a 39-foot Bavareia sailboat to the bottom of the Erie Canal.
It happened at 9:17 Saturday morning in the Town of Lyons.
Authorities say the boat was headed west on the Erie Canal when it hit a center bridge abutment.
Deputies say the driver, 74-year-old Frederick Cooley, was steering the boat around a piece of floating debris when he hit the abutment.
The hull was immediately destroyed and the boat began filling with water.
Cooley and his passenger were able to escape before the boat sank to the bottom of the water.
