Baldwinsville (WSYR-TV) -- The future of the Budweiser plant in Baldwinsville seems to be stronger than ever. It’s adding lines and looking to hire.
You may have even noticed the plant advertising on area billboards, among other places, to fill open jobs.
Things are definitely in full swing at the plant. The brewery cranked out six-million barrels of beer last year, with the expectation to do even more in 2013.
It’s been a few years since things had dwindled down to just about four-million barrels, but then came the game changer last year. The plant added a line that makes only 24 ounce cans, which has become hugely popular. It’s a large reason the plant is looking for highly skilled workers to help run the line and help keep up with the increase on other lines.
“There are certain adaptations you can do to the different lines, but typically with as much volume as this 24 ounce can has brought to the brewery, it needs a whole new can line,” said Plant General Manager Nick Mills.
The plant’s cellars hold 50 different varieties of beer -- the newest being varieties of the craft beer Goose Island and the highly popular Lime-a-Rita, which is made exclusively at the Baldwinsville plant. Both of them are made in Baldwinsville, helping increase production at the plant.
“We are a unique brewery that can make any one of those products, so that’s what makes it really special about the Baldwinsville brewery in that we have that capability,” Mills continued.
It’s not the largest, but it’s the most flexible of Anheuser Busch’s 12 U.S. plants. Add in a new tax agreement with local governments struck a few years ago and help from the economic development agency Centerstate CEO and the brewery is positioning itself to be strong in the future.
The plant employs about 430 full-time and 150 part-time workers. When Anheuser Busch was purchased in 2008 by Belgian beer maker In-Bev, the new owner agreed to keep all of its acquired plants open, according to a contract that expires in 2014.
