CNN: Arrest made in connection with letters authorities are testing for ricin
Washington, D.C. (WSYR-TV) -- An arrest has been made in connection with letters sent to President Obama and Senator Roger Wicker Wednesday that may have been laced with ricin, according to a CNN report.
Law enforcement officials told CNN that the person was arrested in the Tupelo, Mississippi area.
Also on Wednesday, the Hart Senate Office Building where Senator Schumer’s office is located was cordoned off and put on lockdown due to reports of a person handing out suspicious letters.
A representative with Schumer’s Office says he was in no way a target of any type of threat.
Authorities are testing the letters for ricin -- a highly toxic substance derived from castor beans. Just a small amount of the substance can kill an adult if inhaled or ingested. There is no known remedy to counteract the effects of the poison.
