OSWEGO, NY (WSYR-TV) - An Oswego County family is calling on pharmaceutical companies to research and create a vaccine for the EEE virus.

The family of 4-year-old Maggie Wilcox, who died after contracting the disease in 2011, created a non-profit to raise money toward that research.

It held a fundraiser at America Foundry in Oswego on Saturday to raise money.

While EEE is a rare virus that kills about 10 people nationwide each year, the Wilcox family said a human vaccine for it should still be a priority.

The Wilcox Family told NewsChannel 9 that the Army has already developed a vaccine, now in the trial stage.

"Perhaps an availability through the military. Perhaps a recipe so to say is already available. Now we have to get to the point where we can get to some kind of a pharmaceutical company that can make this readily available to people,” said Mike Wilcox.
