Oswego (WSYR-TV) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has ended its search for whatever may or may not have been in the waters of Lake Ontario Thursday night.

The U.S. Coast Guard says it began its search in the Oswego Harbor area of Lake Ontario after receiving a call concerning an object in the water.

The Coast Guard initiated an emergency response in the area, which included a helicopter dropping illumination flares.

That search activity and the flares being dropped prompted numerous calls to the Oswego Police Department from concerned neighbors claiming to see "fireballs in the sky." Police officials contacted the Coast Guard and confirmed they were related to the search.

The flares did not pose any danger to area residents, police said.

Nothing was found during the search.
