Syracuse (WSYR-TV/CNN/ABC News) – The Ohio man that held three women captive for nearly a decade inside his home has been found dead in his jail cell according to reports

that Ariel Castro was found hanging in his jail cell after an apparent suicide.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Joellen Smith says that Castro was found at about 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday, at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient, Ohio.
Facility staff attempted to resuscitate Castro upon finding him.
According to Smith, he was taken to the Ohio State University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 p.m.
Castro had been in protective custody, meaning he was in a cell by himself and checked on by staff every 30 minutes.
The 53-year-old Castro was sentenced on August 1, to life plus 1,000 years for kidnapping, raping and holding the three women captive.
The Department of Rehabilitation and Corrections and Ohio Highway Patrol are investigating Castro's death.
