Convicted murderer Craig Ingersoll found dead in prison

Attica (WSYR-TV) - The man convicted of murdering a woman and dumping her body behind an Oneida County fire station has been found dead in his prison cell.

Craig Ingersoll was found unresponsive, hanging in his cell at Attica State Prison at 9:40 Tuesday night, according to the NYS Dept. of Corrections.

Ingersoll was serving 25 years to life for the murder Jennifer Bennett in January 2007.

Bennett’s body was discovered on Jan. 11, 2007 behind the Deerfield Fire House Pavilion.

Her body was discovered by people sledding nearby. Bennett had last been seen by her mother on January 7 at her home in Utica.

In September 2011, investigators got a hit from the state DNA Database indicating that DNA evidence from the victim matched that of Craig Ingersoll of Herkimer Road in Utica.

He was convicted in November 2012 and sentenced in February.
