Syracuse (WSYR-TV) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially signed new legislation into law, expanding the state’s DNA database.
The new law requires samples to be taken from anyone convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor and it makes New York the first state to take DNA for all crimes.
Supporters say it will be an important tool to fight crime and prevent wrongful convictions.
The law goes into effect on October 1.
