Death of Potsdam boy ruled a homicide
POTSDAM, NY (WSYR-TV) - Police investigators in Potsdam have ruled a 12-year-old boy died after being strangled.
The investigation into the death of Garrett Phillips is officially being looked at as a homicide.
Police say Phillips was alone in his mother's apartment early Monday evening when neighbors reported hearing a loud noise and the sound of someone moaning for help.
When police entered the home, they found the boy lying unconscious on the floor.
He was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he died around 7:20 p.m. Monday.
Garrett was a sixth-grader at A.A. Kingston Middle School.

POTSDAM, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the death of a 12-year-old boy who was found unconscious inside his family's apartment in Northern New York.
Police in Potsdam tell local media outlets that Garrett Phillips was alone in his mother's apartment early Monday evening when neighbors reported hearing a loud noise and the sound of someone moaning for help.
When police and the manager of the apartment building entered the residence, they found the boy lying unconscious on the floor.
He was taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where he died around 7:20 p.m. Monday.
The St. Lawrence County coroner says an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
Police haven't released any other information so far.
Garrett was a sixth-grader at A.A. Kingston Middle School.
