Ogdensburg City Police tried to lure a weapons suspect out of his home but were unsuccessful, leading to a federal raid on his house Thursday.
Details of the John Rumble arrest were revealed by federal court documents as Rumble was arraigned in federal Court in Syracuse Friday afternoon.
The King Street resident is accused of dealing in firearms while being an unlawful user of a controlled substance, and with having a firearm with an obliterated serial number.
An affidavit filed with the court said that federal agents had Ogdensburg Police Sgt. Wayne Ashley place a phone call to Rumble in an attempt to lure him away from his residence early Thursday morning.
Rumble, though, refused to take the bait and told Ashley, "I'm not coming down there. You're going to arrest me!" Rumble said he would speak to Sgt. Ashley only if Ashley went to his house wearing civilian clothes and not accompanied by marked police cars or other officers.
At about 1:20 p.m. Thursday, federal agents went into Rumble's home, executing a federal search warrant.
Though the search was not complete at the filing of the affidavit, approximately 175 rifles and numerous shotguns and pistols had been found. One of the firearms allegedly had an obliterated serial number.
Agents also found crates and large ammunition boxes with hundreds of rounds of ammunition that were make in Russia and other foreign countries.
At about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, agents interviewed Rumble at the Ogdensburg Police Department and he was read his rights.
Rumble waived his rights and told agents that he smoke marijuana with his girlfriend at a bar about 30 days ago, according to the affidavit. Rumble said he does not use hard drugs but smoke marijuana with his girlfriend out of peer pressure.
The search of Rumble's home turned up a triple beam scale with what appeared to be marijuana residue on it, according to the document.
During a search of Rumble's pickup truck, agents allegedly found a loaded, double barreled 12-gauge shotgun behind the seat.
During a pat-down of Rumble himself, it was discovered he was wearing a ballistic vest.
Hair and urine samples were obtained from Rumble and will be submitted for drug analysis.
It is a felony violation of federal law for an unlawful user of drugs to possess firearms, the affidavit asserts.
Not only does Rumble possess firearms, he is a licensed Federal Firearms License holder and distributes firearms and ammunition to third parties, many of whom are also prohibited persons because of their drug use, the affidavit charges.
