Smithfield (WSYR-TV) – The Madison County Sheriff’s Office has charged a driver with DWI following a crash that injured three people early Sunday morning.

The three victims were taken to University Hospital in Syracuse.

The sheriff’s office says 21-year-old Ryan Barnes of Chittenango was transported in serious condition, 39-year-old Helena Cross of Peterboro suffered serious but non-life threatening injuries, and 33-year-old Robert Jacques of Canastota had less severe non-life threatening injuries.

The crash happened around 1:00 a.m. on Pleasant Valley Road, between Old County Road and Brooks Road in the town of Smithfield.

Sheriff's deputies said the driver of a pickup truck pulled off the shoulder of the road after experiencing mechanical problems. A second driver stopped to help.

A third vehicle, driven by 35-year-old Christopher Graham of Oneida, was heading north on Pleasant Valley Road when he struck both stopped vehicles, according to the sheriff’s office.

Graham has been charged with Operating a Motor Vehicle with .08 of 1% or more alcohol in blood; Driving While Intoxicated; Vehicular Assault in the 2nd Degree; Assault in the 3rd Degree; Unsafe Speed; and Crossing Road Markings.

Graham is scheduled to appear in the Town of Smithfield Court on August 28.

The passerby who was assisting the broken-down truck, Corrine Jones of Sherrill, was not injured in the crash.
