Syracuse (WSYR-TV/ABC News) – The CEO of Yahoo! has ordered employees to show up at the office.
The new policy is a significant change for the company’s flexible, work-from-home option.
The company’s new CEO, 37-year-old Marissa Mayer, has been a controversial figure at the faded internet giant since she took the helm last year.
On the day she accepted the position, she announced she was pregnant. She made headlines again by taking only two-weeks maternity leave.
She generated a firestorm at Yahoo! when she released a memo saying employees would be required to report to the office beginning June 1.
It read:
“To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important. So we need to be working side-by-side.”
Yahoo! says it doesn’t discuss internal matters, but said “This isn’t a broad industry view on working from home – this is about what is right for Yahoo! right now.”
The new policy is particularly irksome for the company’s working mothers, according to Business Insider.
Business Insider also pointed out that Mayer had a nursery installed in her office, an option that isn’t open to all Yahoo! employees.
