FBI: 1 of 2 Chicago high-rise jail escapees caught
CHICAGO (AP) - The FBI says it's captured one of two bank robbers who escaped from a high-rise Chicago jail.
Joseph Banks was caught late Thursday.
Authorities say Banks and Kenneth Conley escaped from Chicago's Metropolitan Correctional Center early Tuesday by apparently smashing a hole in a wall at the bottom of a narrow cell window and squeezing through, then scaling down about 20 stories using a knotted rope or bed sheets.
The two men apparently squeezed through a narrow window and scaled down about 20 stories using a rope possibly made of knotted bed sheets.
An FBI affidavit filed late Tuesday says the men shared a cell, and that their beds contained clothing and sheets stuffed under a blanket that appeared to look like a body.
The affidavit says fake metal bars also were found in the cell, and that the cell's window was broken and had makeshift rope tied to its bars.
