Lysander (WSYR-TV) – An elderly Lysander man tried to put out a fire at his home for nearly an hour before firefighters were alerted on Tuesday.

Fire officials say the fire broke out at round 4 p.m. at the home located at 9418 Fenner Road. We’re told a passerby saw smoke coming from the home and drove to the Cody Fire Station to report it.

According to 1st Assistant Fire Chief Bruce Butler, the homeowner, identified as Clarence Crandell, was able to safely escape the blaze.

Butler told NewsChannel 9 the fire was especially difficult to put out due to the fact that there were no hydrants in the area. Tankers were forced to haul water to the scene. Butler also said the home was packed with papers, wood and other stuff that made fighting the blaze that much harder.

The blaze was so intense 11 fire departments responded to the scene.

The Red Cross is assisting Crandell.

No word yet on what caused the fire.
