(WSYR-TV, Syracuse) Northwest winds have been importing cold, Canadian air. When the cold air passes over the relatively warm Lake Ontario (lake temps still in the upper 40s), it absorbs moisture like a sponge and drops it over the land in the form of lake effect snow.
Winds will be out of the west/northwest through tonight, allowing for the band of lake effect snow to become more organized overnight into Sunday morning. From there, snow will begin to drift northwards, with the heaviest snow just east of Lake Ontario. Accumulations won’t be grandiose for most, but by Sunday evening the hillier elevations could see an additional 2-4” on top of what was received Saturday. Elsewhere, expect an additional 1-2”.
When lake effect snow gets started, it is hard to get it to quit. While high pressure tries to build in on Sunday afternoon, it likely won’t be enough to staunch the snowfall over the Tug Hill region. Expect snowfall to last north of Syracuse through Monday evening.
