Florida community bans 'saggy pants' that reveal underwear
Cocoa, Fla. (ABC News/WSYR-TV) - Residents in a Florida community will have to pull up their pants in public after an ordinance was passed banning people from letting their underwear show while on city streets.
The Cocoa City Council voted on the measure Tuesday evening.
A councilman said the measure will clean up the city’s image, while a local police chief noted that it could be used to stop suspects and search them for drugs or weapons.
Opponents counter that it could lead to racial profiling.
The ordinance requires officers to ask offenders to pull up their pants first. If the person refuses, they may receive a $25 fine for the first offense or $50 for the second. Fines could go up to $100 for repeat offenders.
The measure goes into effect Jan. 1.
