ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gun enthusiasts say New York's tough new gun laws are an overreach driven by political ambition.

The New York legislation was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday.

Among other things, It tightens a ban on assault-style rifles, calls for background checks on ammunition purchases, outlaws large-capacity magazines and tries to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people deemed to be a threat.

Supporters say it's a model for the nation while gun-rights activists are condemning it as a knee-jerk piece of legislation that won't make anyone safer and is too extreme to win support in the rest of the country.
