Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – Syracuse Police have identified the man who died after a fire under the I-690 and 81 interchange bridge, near Catherine Street, late Friday night.

Police have identified the man as 40-year-old Timothy Wilkin, who they say was homeless and living in a camp beneath the McBride Street Bridge.

Police say the fire was helping keep Wilkin and others warm, but ignited nearby items before burning out of control.

Wilkin died from fire related injuries, including burns and smoke inhalation.

A portion of 690 East from Adams St. to McBride St. was shut down for hours as emergency crews worked the scene.

Police say the bridge was inspected by the DOT and determined to be safe.
