Oneida (WSYR-TV) -- Boaters and classic car enthusiasts now have more fuel options. They can now pump ethanol-free gas at some stations in Central New York, including the Sav On near Oneida Lake.
"My buddies and I are always talking about how we don't want gas with ethanol in it," said boater Joel Hirschey. "I usually look for that."
The Sav On station on the corner of Route 31 and 13 in the town of Lennox started offering ethanol-free gas in mid-May. Employees say the decision was fueled by demand. Just this week, sales have gone up 26 percent compared to the week before.
And, it’s not just boats boosting business , many classic cars also use non-ethanol gas.
“If I just put ethanol in it I get a knock, my engine doesn't like it,” said Doug Babcock who was filling up his classic car.
“If you don’t use them on a daily basis the fuel has the opportunity to sit. The fuel can actually separate and that can cause performance issues,” said Director of Sav On Operations Sean Brown.
Ethanol-free gas will cost you a little bit more at the pump. Right now it’s listed at $3.68 compared to $3.47 for regular gas.
“I'm getting better gas mileage so I think it justifies it. I have snowmobiles and all kinds of toys…I see a big difference,” said Eddy Martyn.
Sav-On plans to put non-ethanol gas in more stations, including Verona and one near Oneida.
The Nice & Easy on Bartell Road in Brewerton also sells non-ethanol gas. Find out where you can get ethanol-free gas by
