East Syracuse (WYR-TV) - It was September 9, 1962 when "Colorful Channel 9" first signed on the air. Sunday marks 50 years to the day from NewsChannel 9's first broadcast.

When we began broadcasting, on the 9th day of the 9th month, channel 9 was based out of a studio in the basement of ShoppingTown Mall in DeWitt. Today, we broadcast in High Definition from our home in East Syracuse.

A month after singing on, the station took over the Kallet Shoppingtown Theater, next door to the TV studios for a star-studded gala, welcoming channel 9 to Central New York.

Later this month, NewsChannel 9 has another big event planned celebrating our 50th Anniversary and you're invited to join us September 27 at the SRC Arena on the Onondaga Community College campus. The proceeds will go toward the Upstate Cancer Center. Click here for details and to get tickets.
