Town of DeWitt (WSYR-TV) State Park and Town officials will meet Monday to see if they can open part of the trail after a section of the canal was breached and is now spilling into Butternut Creek.
As a result of the breach, the bike and walking path along the canal and creek remains closed Sunday.
There are temporary dams in place which has stopped most of the water from flowing into the creek.
"The path needs to be closed due to heavy equipment that will be moving up and down the path" said Rob Hillbrand from the NYS Parks Department. "We just don't want to have pedestrians interacting with the equipment that will be moving on the towpath."
The problem was first noticed Friday, when a section of the wall holding back the canal gave way. The NYS Canal Corporation conducted an inspection and at first determined the problem was minor. The breach grew in size to about 12 to 15 feet wide.
The site now requires emergency repair work.
