One killed in snowmobile crash

FORESTPORT, NY (WSYR-TV) - State Police are investigating a fatal snowmobile crash that happened in the Oneida County town of Forestport.

The crash happened shortly before 10:30 on Friday night on River Road.

State Police say 23-year old Richard Petty of Pine Bush was riding solo on a snowmobile in a group with seven other riders.

According to investigators, three of the riders including Petty, were traveling at an unsafe speed and Petty lost control on a curve and went off the north shoulder. He went airborne and then hit a snow embankment and was ejected from the snowmobile, before hitting a tree.

State Police say Petty suffered a massive head injury and was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital where he later died.

The investigation is continuing.
